This course will focus on developing methodological possibilities and concrete pedagogical options for dealing with 9/11 in the advanced EFL classroom. The general problem of dealing with 9/11 will be discussed, which is the view from the German cultural background into the American world. This process is further complicated by the role of the media that create an artificial confrontation of a monolithic Western perspective and an Arabian fundamentalist one. Using a variety of texts and media, this course will explore the complexity of 9/11 in the context of EFL teaching and learning. The focus will be on developing key competences such as writing, reading, literary, intercultural, media and evaluating competences. Themes will be looked at in their relationship to representations through literary texts, films, songs, pictures, cartoons and Web 2.0.
Jonathan Safran Foer’ s Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close will function as textual basis and should be read by the beginning of the seminar. |
