In the course of this seminar, we will come up with an appropriate definition of what “’discourse glue’” (Fraser 1990: 385) refers to, namely discourse markers. In order to do so, we will have a look at diverse possible subcategories of what some linguists call pragmatic markers. Politeness (e.g. please) and discourse markers (e.g. well) along with hedges (e.g. as it were) are only three of the various kinds of markers or particles that we will investigate in linguistic literature. While those case studies provide the theoretical foundations of our work, we will also conduct our own studies with the help of freely available online corpora. This means each of the linguistic studies will be accompanied by and compared to hands-on investigations in spoken and written authentic English.
