Ever heard of Chester A. Arthur – no? What about Millard Fillmore – still no clue? Well, they were American Presidents. They were not as famous as Washington, Lincoln, or Kennedy, but they, too, shaped the United States of America that we know today. In this course we will take a closer look at a number of American Presidents with a special focus on those not so well known. Instead of simply looking at their biographies we will consider various topics such the Founding Fathers, religion, or depictions of presidents in popular culture. We will also follow the 2012 presidential election and consider the implications of the presidency for American national identity. This seminar will make the case that the American Presidents are truly a league of extraordinary gentlemen.
