In this seminar, we will discuss a number of very different novels from various Anglophone literatures published since the year 2000. Taken together, they are representative of a number of key developments in recent fiction, and some of the texts quickly established themselves as widely discussed contemporary "classics". Editions to be used: To facilitate discussions of specific passages, please make sure to use the editions indicated (all paperback and reasonably priced): Philip Roth, THE HUMAN STAIN (London: Vintage, 2001); J.M. Coetzee, SLOW MAN (London: Penguin, 2006); Amitav Ghosh, THE HUNGRY TIDE (London: Harper Collins, 2005); Paul Auster, INVISIBLE (Picador USA, 2010).
All participants are to read The Human Stain for the first session.
Apart from the first text, these are mere suggestions: Depending on the interests of the participants, we can agree on different texts to be read! |
