In this course, we will investigate pre-2001 texts that feature an apocalyptic vision of New York City. From the crime-ridden and gang-infested city streets of films such as The Warriors and Escape from New York, to Manhattan as the devil's residence in the comic Midnight Nation, popular culture has long used the Big Apple as the prototypical setting for visions of chaos, death, and destruction. To better understand this tradition, we will watch films and read comics which we will then relate to theoretical texts provided in an online reader. Students will also hold presentations on select films and comics, as well as the historical and theoretical background of such cultural products. |
