Meaning is everywhere in language – it resides in individual words, in idioms and in sentences. Meaning can be of various kinds: denotational or connotational, literal or transferred, clear or vague, ambiguous or unambiguous etc. Meanings are found both in the mind and in the dictionary. Meaning(s) can be creatively exploited and played with, e.g. in puns. Issues like the above are dealt with by (lexical) semantics . In this course we will survey major approaches to explaining what meaning is, how to describe it adequately, how lexemes and their meanings are interconnected, and how users create new (facets of) meaning. |
