How far do we need to go back in history and beyond a specific nation state to understand contemporary societal transformations? What is the use of comparing societies, and what do we mean by “society“ as the unit of analysis in the first place? This lecture provides an introduction into the theoretical and methodological foundations of comparative sociology. Starting from sociological classics, we discuss current controversies of comparative research, including the challenges posed by processes of globalization and transnationalization. Aside from an understanding of theoretical and methodological foundations, students will become acquainted with the key texts representing the central approaches applied in comparative sociology. They will also gain an overview of the diverse areas in which comparative methods are applied, including the sociology of religion, comparative research on capitalism, migration studies, and macro-historical analyses of democratization.
