The objective of this course is to give an understanding and implementation of failure concept of materials in the aspect of mechanical structural integrity, especially in the fields of fatigue and fracture analysis. This course discusses the following chapters: introduction to the material failure, structure and deformation in materials, stress-strain relationships and behavior, yielding and fracture under combined stresses, fracture of cracked members, fatigue strength design and analysis, fatigue analysis using stress-based approach, fatigue analysis using stress-based approach for notched members, fatigue analysis using strain-based approach, fatigue crack growth, improvement of fatigue-life in mechanical structures, multi-axial fatigue, and creep analysis. An experiment or computational analysis project in the field of fatigue and fracture will be given to the students for completing this course. The tentative topics are listed in the following table:
