What is Linguistics and how does the study of language relate to the real world? Can linguistic findings be applied to practical issues, particularly to the field of language teaching and learning, or is linguistics just a theoretical attempt to better understand language and human communication? Applied Linguistics and its orientation towards the study of real, everyday language use as well as the way this field of research provides solutions for communication and other language problems will be the focus of this class. The areas Applied Linguistics deals with range from aspects of linguistic and communicative competence, first or second language acquisition, bilingualism, literacy, language disorders, etc. to language and communication related problems in and between societies as well as. language variation and linguistic discrimination, multilingualism, language conflict, language policy and language planning. Therefore, pragmatic, psycholinguistic, and sociolinguistic issues in addition to language acquisition theory will be discussed. We shall deal with three key issues relevant to the study of language and cultural as well as language learning:
- we shall discuss the field of applied linguistics with a special focus on its relevance for the study of language acquisition as well as language use in social and cultural contexts;
- we shall discuss aspects of cultural studies (in the past commonly referred to as "Landeskunde") and explore the relationship of language (use) and socio-cultural context;
- we shall discuss how findings in applied linguistics and cultural studies can be applied to language teaching and learning.
