Travel Writing has been important throughout the centuries, although it has only recently been acknowledged as a central literary genre. This seminar will focus on a very new section of travel writing, namely postcolonial travel writing. After surveying travel writing of the 20th Century, we will read two travel accounts by postcolonial writers, namely Ferdinand Dennis and Caryl Phillips, who flip the pattern and write about Europe in a completely different and new fashion. Students are asked to buy AND read:
Phillips, Caryl. The European Tribe. New York: Random House, 2000.
Dennis, Ferdinand. Behind the Frontlines. Journey into Afro-Britain. London: Victor Gollancz LTD, 1988.
