The seminar will focus on notions of identity in contemporary Irish and English poetry. After familiarizing ourselves with some basic theories of identity and identity construction, we will read a wide selection of contemporary poetry and analyze how personal and cultural identity is constructed in and through poetic texts. We will attempt to outline the differences between English and Irish forms of identity construction, contemplate the interdependencies and intersecting areas of personal and cultural identity, private and public spaces, and learn about the rhetoric-poetical strategies that contemporary poets and poetry use to create and express varying aspects of identity.
A Reader for this course will be available in the copy-shop in "Reckhammerweg" at the beginning of the semester. |
