Two books have had a huge impact on many children then and now: Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. Written in Victorian and Edwardian England, those works reflected the spirit of their respective times, but also created something completely new. In this seminar, we will have a close look at both authors and their work, examine gender roles and questions of identity in both novels. Students are asked to buy and read both novels before the beginning of the semester. A reader with additional texts will be made available. Make sure to bring along your copies to the first session:
Carroll, Lewis. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking- Glass. London: Penguin Classics, 2011. (ISBN-13: 978-0141439761)
Barrie, J. M. Peter Pan: Peter and Wendy and Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens. London: Penguin Classics, 2005. (ISBN-13: 978-0142437933)
Please note: Only the first part of the two novels will be part of the seminar (Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Peter and Wendy) |
