In this seminar, we will read key texts in Romantic Non-Fiction, including poetological works such as Wordsworth's "Preface to the Lyrical Ballads", selections from Coleridge's Biographia Literaria, Shelley's "Defence of Poetry" or selected letters by John Keats, political treatises such as Edmund Burke's Reflections on the Revolution in France or Shelley's "Philosophical View of Reform", but also romantic travel writing, scientific writing and journalism. We will also draw comparisons with selected contemporary German texts.
Note: A reader containing all texts to be discussed will be available in the copy-shop Reckhammerweg from early March onwards. Students are expected to read the first two texts in the reader for the first session. There may be reading tests.
