Pidgins and Creoles - Einzelansicht

During the colonial period, English was transported to other, often remote, regions of the world. This did not only result in the development of new varieties of English but also in the evolution of pidgin and creole languages. In this class, we will discuss the theoretical background of pidgins and creoles in the context of language contact, as well as their sociolinguistic situation and the linguistic structures exhibited. We will focus on English-based pidgins and creoles around the world, and critically assess studies that claim English itself to be a creole.
