In this course we will investigate into the construction of national identities in general and English national identities in particular, concentrating on the common collective symbols and icons, on the traditional “other without”, e.g. Scotland and Europe, as well on the “other within”, e.g. the immigrants from Asia and the Caribbean. We will base our discussion on a whole variety of media ranging from essays and poems to videos documenting sports events and great national happenings such as the recent royal wedding. You will also have to watch every game of the English national football team during the European championship. A reader with relevant material will be available at the beginning of the semester. |
