This course examines the range of linguistic variety of present-day British accents and dialects. We will assess and evaluate approaches to the study of dialects and you will acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the present-day dialects spoken in Britain. By examining in detail a range of dialects you will acquire a deeper understanding of how dialects differ and you will be able to compare the structural differences between dialects. You will also be able to further your understanding of the place of a standard variety within a language. The recognition of different dialectal structures has major implications for a wide variety of subjects, such as gender and class, and it also has implications for the use of dialect in several areas of the media and education. |
