Much of our every day interaction occurs through talk carried out in informal conversations with others. The purpose of this seminar is to get a basic understanding of the ways in which we actively make sense of what others mean by what they say and do. We will obtain a grasp of basic issues by reviewing writings of the originators of ethnomethodology, and we will explore contemporary directions (i.e., studies in organizational settings and/or of situated cognition) in which the ethnomethodological enterprise has gone. Along the way, we will collect our own ethnographic material that will help reveal structures of daily life. |
