In this seminar we will focus on visual representations of Australia, beginning with pictures of First Encounters drawn by members of the crew on Captain Cook’s ship Endeavour (who ‘discovered’ Terra Australis, the southern continent, in 1770). We will then analyse a number of iconic representations of Australia in literature and visual media, including a range of films dealing with key concepts in Australian culture (such as Ned Kelly, Crocodile Dundee and Australia). Representations of Indigenous Australians will be of particular interest to us and will be dealt with in connection through an analysis of Ten Canoes (film) and Rabbit-Proof Fence (book and film).
A reader containing a selection of images and texts will be available from Kopiersysteme Priebe (Segerothstr.) from the beginning of the semester. |
