“Individuelle Förderung” (Individual Learner Support) in the Language Classroom:
A joint project between the University of Duisburg-Essen and the Helmholtz Gymnasium Essen. Increasingly heterogeneous classes are both a challenge and an opportunity for language teachers. Concepts of differentiation and individual learner support enable teachers to not only provide appropriate learning options for the individual learner, but they also help to use heterogeneity as an enrichment.
In this project, students will work with different classes of the Helmholtz Gymnasium in Essen and participate in "Förderunterricht". These are classes that are geared to differentiation and individual learner support. Apart from the work at school, a seminar will provide background information on differentiation, methodology and lesson planning.
Jahrgangsstufe 10: „Vorbereitung einer mündlichen Kommunikationsprüfung". According to the new curriculum, one written test (Klausur) can be replaced by an oral presentation (mündliche Kommunikationsprüfung). Thus, concepts for training presentation and discourse skills for different learner types and students with different ability levels will be developed in this project and put into action in class.
Students are required to participate in the preparatory seminar (Ms Osieck) that will take place at the Helmholtz-Gymnasium, Rosastraße 83, 45130 Essen, Tuesdays 2-4 p.m. In addition to that, students are required to teach one day per week in one class (see school dates below). They also have the opportunity to participate the second day in the same class.
