This lecture will be concerned with the development and present-day distribution of the English language throughout the anglophone world with particular emphasis on the manner in which it was transported to various locations overseas during the colonial period. This is closely connected to the rise of the British Empire. Here the manner in which English was transmitted is central and there are various scenarios which will be considered in detail. In particular, the relationship of the English language to the indigenous cultures of those countries to which it was taken will form a central focus. There will also be a consideration of the present-day role of English as a global language. A large selection of topics are possible for course work, either based on anglophone countries/regions or key issues in the spread of English.
