This lecture course will familiarize students with literature and culture of the Victorian Age by focusing on the works of celebrated Victorian novelists (such as Charles Dickens, the Brontës, Walter Scott, William Thackeray), poets (Elizabeth Barrett, Robert Browning, Algernon Charles Swinburne, to name but a few) and painters (the art of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the women artists, poets and models of their circle will be of special interest to us). The lecture course will also introduce specific genres (e.g. the social novel, melodrama, crime fiction, sensational literature) as well as key cultural concepts of the Victorian Age (imperialism, colonialism, industrialization, class etc.) with a particular emphasis on gender roles. |
