Despite the rapid growth of TV and internet, newspapers are still an important mass medium. In this course, their historical development as well as their current state will be investigated. First, the special communicative situation in the print media will be taken into account. The diachronic approach will then reveal major trends, e.g. for greater informality and a higher degree of personalisation in the press. The synchronic comparison will show more differences in the language and layout of the print media. It will, for example, illustrate how popular and quality newspapers are adapted to their target audiences. The analysis of selected newspaper genres will reveal further structural and functional variation. |
