Intuitively, how teachers and pupils communicate must be important: after all, talk is central to most of what happens in classrooms. Through talk, for example, concepts are explained, tasks demonstrated, questions posed and discussed, but also arguments won or lost, and identities expressed. The aims of this seminar are therefore to introduce you to methods for analysis of talk-in-interaction, and to consider a range of topics that will give you the opportunity to investigate some of the many forms and functions of language in classroom interactions (e.g. power dynamics, politeness routines). You will be encouraged to collect your own data from all available sources (e.g. television, internet) and learn how to analyze this authentic material. |
