As we look at Scots and Scottish English, you will learn about the history of both varieties, see (and hear!) how speakers use them nowadays and explore their linguistic features in contrast to other varieties of English. We will discuss issues such as language policies and language planning, processes involved in language variation and change, as well as theories and methods of traditional and modern (social) dialectology. This course is designed to be as hands-on as possible, so there will be plenty of opportunities to engage actively in linguistic analyses. And who knows - perhaps some of you are even interested in conducting their own little research project? |
