This lecture offers an introduction to the study of language. After introducing some general definitions and properties of language, the lecture provides insights into the different levels of the English language. It starts out from a description of its sounds (phonetics, phonology), then moves on to an investigation of the structure and meaning of words (morphology, semantics), looks at how words are combined into sentences (syntax) and, finally, at how language is used in actual speech situations (pragmatics). The lecture is complemented by an obligatory tutorial. |
