Since the days of The Cisco Kid (1950–56) and I Love Lucy (1951–57) Latinas and Latinos have regularly appeared on U.S. network television. They continue to do so in series like Modern Family (2009–) and The Bridge (2013–). But this representation has often been unfavorable. In this class we will explore the ways in which Latinas and Latinos have been depicted over the past 75 years and how stereotypes have been created, exploited or overcome. Specifically we will examine the construction of early spics and underdogs, the representation of Chicano pride and Latino urban professionals, the uses of the Latin uncanny, the association of Latinas/os with crime, Latina women, children’s television, the mainstreaming of Latinas/os, the comic questioning of stereotypes, as well as Latin glamor. Our viewing of programs will be complemented by a sizeable amount of critical reading. A reader will be available from the copy shop at Reckhammerweg 4 by Oct. 24.
