The Social Foundation of Language - Einzelansicht

Using language and participating in society are closely related activities in that using language is integral to social life and participating in society is integral to the process of making sense of linguistic constructions. The purpose of this seminar is to get a basic understanding of the ways in which we actively make sense of what others mean by what they say and do. We will obtain a grasp of basic issues by reviewing writings of the originators of ethnomethodology and linguistic anthropology. Along the way, we will collect our own ethnographic material that will help reveal structures of daily life.
