The aims of this seminar are to analyze the historical, social, cultural and linguistic effects of the transnational flow of people across national borders. In particular, we will critically study the way news in the press may contribute to (new) racism. With a focus on the media Discourses in Germany and the UK, we will develop an understanding of how immigration touches upon notions of identity, belonging and culture. The aims of this course are, hence, to introduce you to aforementioned concepts. Furthermore, you will learn how to apply principles of critical discourse analysis (CDA) to a range of written texts and how to analyze this material. You will be encouraged to collect your own data from all available sources (e.g. television, internet, newspapers). |
