As you know, linguistics is concerned with the objective description of the English language. However, there have also been numerous prescriptive approaches to enforce a particular language use, for instance in early grammar writing, lexicography and usage guides. One such feature, which has been prohibited for example, is the split infinitive. A discussion of the influence of prescriptivism still today will be accompanied by (our own small-scale) descriptive studies of language use. |
