The last decade of the nineteenth century is perhaps the most productive, contradictory and inspiring period in British literary history. The tensions between progressive and reactionary forces in all fields of social life spurred authors into producing texts that challenged preceding conceptions of art. We will deal with a number of seminal authors such as Oscar Wilde, Rudyard Kipling, Virginia Woolf, Thomas Hardy, H.G. Wells and Arthur Symons. Reading their key texts within the political and cultural context of the 1890s,we will engage especially with their understanding of art and politics. Additionally, we will have a look at how the competition between the diverse literary cultures during this decade paved the way for Modernism. A reader will be available by the end of September from the copyshop on Reckhammerweg. |
