This seminar will be concerned with the history of Germans in North America, the first of whom settled in Germantown, Pennsylvania in 1683. We will be looking at the migration from Germany to the New World and at the establishment of German settlements there, observing what happened to the linguistic and cultural practices that Germans had brought with them. After reviewing the experiences of German immigrants in America the focus will shift to the construction of Germany and Germans in U.S. literature, film, television, popular culture, and politics.
