"Yo Ho, A Pirate's Life for Me?" Buccaneers, Corsairs and Pirates in Reality and Fiction throughout History - Einzelansicht

With the release of Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean – The Curse of the Black Pearl” in 2003, and its numerous sequel features, pirate-themed entertainment and merchandise has experienced a renaissance in popularity in Western cultures. Consequently, in this course, we are going to juxtapose romantic notions of buccaneering with existent contemporary threats of piracy in different Anglophone cultures. We will examine historical sources as well as literary and cinematic representations of pirates in order to gain a better understanding of a cultural phenomenon inspiring authors and criminals alike for the past centuries. Topics of this class will be, for example, definition of piracy and delineation from other forms of freebooting, illuminating the historical context, the pirates’ code of honor, female pirates and the role of women in piracy, investigation of the attractiveness of pirate narratives in Anglophone cultures, and modern day varieties of this very particular type of crime.
