The wordless novel which may be understood by everybody regardless of his or her mother tongue is probably the only real transnational genre of Literature. Since its first manifestations in the form of the wood cut novels by Frans Maserel, Lynd Ward and others in the 1930s it lay dormant until it was resurrected in the 1980s with graphic novelists like Eric Drooker and Shaun Tan. In this seminar we will analyze works of some of the major representatives of this treasure trough. A reader with relevant material will be available at the beginning of the semester. |
