The seminar engages with poetry, pamphlets, prose fiction, historical documents, life writing and other relevant genres from the time of the English Civil War and Commonwealth period (1640-1660), the Exclusion Crisis and the Glorious Revolution (1678-1689), as well as from the period leading up to and including the American Revolution, thus the period from about 1770 to 1785. We will not only discuss the way in which literature engages with key political events but will also discuss the role print culture played in these events. We will also attempt to trace the intellectual influence of political thought of the English Revolution on the American Revolution in key figures such as Thomas Paine. Students are expected to read the first text in the reader for the first session. A reader containing all texts to be discussed will be available in the copyshop Reckhammerweg from early October onwards. |
