The development of the European Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) is one of the most significant aspects of the European integration process. The management of the Euro as its legal tender is done by the ’independent’ European Central Bank (ECB), highlighting its outstanding role in the institutional setting of European economic and monetary governance. The objective of this course is to gain a deeper understanding of what the EMU is, to investigate the role of the ECB, and to examine how studying the EMU can contribute to the research of the European integration process. At the end of this course you will have gained an overview of core concepts in the scholarly political academic and public debates regarding the EMU and the ECB (e.g. central bank independence, the recent developments of the Eurozone), and an understanding of the relationship of the ECB, the EMU and the European integration process. |
