Foreign Policy and Regional Conflict Settlement in East Asia
This seminar will start with an overview of historical developments and basic patterns of the foreign relations (and foreign policies) of East Asian countries (China, Japan, the two Koreas). It will analyze recent conflict constellations in the East Asian region and pay special attention to the role of external players (the US, Russia). Apart from old and new territorial disputes and conflict issues - Taiwan, island disputes in the East and South China Sea, (maritime) conflicts over resources, North Korea’s nuclear tests, the US pivot to Asia and its implications for the regional security architecture - the seminar will also shed light on regional conflict resolutions and conflict settlements. In the final part, the seminar will shift the focus from the regional to the global level and examine the new role(s) of (North) East Asian states in world politics. |
