166 years after his death Edgar Allan Poe remains one of the most widely read American authors. Characterized as a dark romantic, as the inventor of the detective story, as a mystery writer, as a captivating poet and essayist, Poe was fascinated by the suffering human soul. This class will acquaint you with a wide selection of works by and about Poe; it will explore the cultural and scientific contexts of his oeuvre, and it will invite you to do close readings of some of Poe’s best-known tales and poems, including his novella The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym.
