In this seminar, we will have a closer look at how studying language intersects with studying sexuality. We will, among other things, talk about the following topics:
- how sexual identities (e.g. gay, lesbian and heterosexual) are expressed and constructed via language,
- how sexual desire is expressed and constructed via language,
- how studying sexuality is intrinsically linked to the concept of gender,
- what insights the theory of queer linguistics offers, and what its potential shortcomings might be,
- what 'heteronormativity' means,
- how gay men and lesbian women are discursively constructed, by means of language, e.g. in British newspapers, gay and lesbian erotic narratives, personal adverts, coming out narratives or TV and film,…
