Remakes and sequels of a film are often a modern version of the original, adapted to the contemporary world in which they are produced. This frequently has a bearing on the portrayal of female characters as reflecting an apparent change in gender roles. In the original Sabrina (1954), for instance, the eponymous lead character spends some time in France taking a culinary course taught by a male chef. In the 1995 remake, this time is spent doing an internship with Vogue magazine with a female boss in charge. Or take M from the James Bond movies - ever since GoldenEye (1995), this has been a female character. In this course, we will examine a number of original films and, as applicable, their prequels (produced after the original film), sequels or remakes and analyse how the genders are represented in these films. Relevant literature will be made available in the form of a syllabus. |
