In this seminar we will be taking a look a several contemporary novels and graphic novels that deal with those infamous three letters: “s-e-x”. In doing so we will attempt to understand the ways in which both sexuality and gender are constructed in the American context. Close readings and classroom discussions will further help us to critically examine the social pressures, norms and deviations that surround the topic at hand. While not pornographic in nature, students should be aware that course materials will likely address all manners of sexuality in an explicit and, at times, graphic nature. (Not for the weak at heart or reading-adverse; For the open-minded and discussion-interested.) |
