Sociolinguistics - in its broadest sense - is the study of language use in human society. Education, on the other hand, deals with a form of teaching humans and transmitting knowledge from one generation to the next. Both fields do - at first sight - not have much in common. There are, however, major meeting points with regard to linguistic heterogeneity in the classroom.
This class explores the impact of linguistic and cultural diversity on educational settings and provides an overview of sociolinguistics und current controversies in this field. Topics include language attitudes, language contact and change, linguistic and cultural identity, bilingualism, and processes of language acquisition. We will see how these issues relate to educational policies and practices in the US and the English-speaking world. This class will be conducted through lecture parts, discussions and activities. Readings will be made available through an online semesterapparat (duepublico).
