As the city of Seattle had its moment in the cultural spotlight of the 1990s, so did the region it was considered part of. In this seminar, we will investigate the literary construction of a region. By analyzing texts ranging from creative non-fiction and short stories to one utopian epistolary novel, this class intends to shed light on the cultural mechanisms of constructing and asserting region, and the way that literary culture can anticipate, be part of, and critically question larger cultural trends. Students are expected to obtain a copy of Ernest Callenbach's novel Ecotopia. Further readings and secondary literature will be provided on a moodle platform accompanying the course. |
