William Labov (*1927) is one of the most influential linguists and considered the founder of modern sociolinguistics. In this course, we will look at his contributions to linguistics, most notably his studies on English language variation in the United States by region, sex, class and additional factors. Students are expected to do presentations; a list of topics will be made available at the start of class. |
