In this seminar, we will explore the different ways in which globalization has been defined and interpreted throughout the past twenty years. As a starting point, we will read summarized versions of the most influential texts and critically discuss the impacts these texts have had on academia, policy making, etc. Although the seminar is concerned first and foremost with the sociology of globalization, key texts from other fields, including cultural anthropology, geography and political science, will be introduced as well. The second part of the seminar will inquire into “alternative” ways of viewing globalization, including the impact on the field of the rise of the Global South. In the end, we will all have a clearer idea of what globalization is and how it can best be understood. |
