In this seminar we will spent the entire semester with director Ridley Scott's 2012 film Prometheus. The film will serve as an example of the possibilities of the modern media to serve as indicators for cultural change and, consequently, cultural diagnosis. The film will thus serve as an exemplary cultural artefact that we will use to trace diverse cultural negotiations in contemporary postmodern Anglophone culture. We will read Prometheus, among others, in terms gender and sexuality, psychoanalytically, intertextually (with regard to the Alien franchise, but also more widely), with an eye to the conflict between religion and science, in the context of myth as well as regarding notion of post-humanity. Each critical perspective will emerge from our reading and discussion of theoretical texts which will base our approaches on and situate them in the current scholarly discourse.
A reader containing all texts will be available at the copyshop Unser Kopierladen, Reckhammerweg from beginning of April.
Although we will watch it together, I strongly suggest to be familiar with the film Prometheus before the beginning of the seminar! |
