Never before did English literature thrive as much as under Queen Elizabethan (1558-1603). One need only regard the names Philip Sidney, Edmund Spenser, Samuel Daniel, Ben Jonson and, of course, William Shakespeare to establish our indebtedness to the second half of the 16th century. However this lecture will not only deal with these prolific writers, but also with the cultural and political contexts that shaped them. Protestantism, exploration and trade, the monarchy, the progression of science and, last but not least, the advent of Renaissance thought will be issues among many we will concern ourselves with.
