Mixed Group (different Projects on Offer / choose between pre-selected schools and schools of your choice): A toolkit for successful lessons
This course is meant to support your own teaching during the school practice and thus it will provide a toolkit to create successful English lessons. You will learn how to plan and organize your interesting lessons (Stundenverlaufsplan), how to maintain a level of discipline and attentiveness in your classroom, how to give instructions and how to motivate your students. This course will offer some theory on how to teach a foreign language but it is mainly a hands-on approach, i.e. we will experience how different classroom arrangements and teaching methods and techniques work.
For your school practice you will have the choice between pre-selected schools and schools of your choice, i.e. you can take part in one of our projects but you can also choose this course as a general preparation for any kind of school practice that suits you. These are possible projects:
- Offer your own Afternoon Clubs in one of our partner schools (one Gymnasium and one Realschule): Clubs that were taught by students in the past were, for example, Radio Clubs, Drama Clubs, Board Game Clubs, Marine Life Clubs (focus on Biology), a Harry Potter Club, a Film Club etc. In a team of 2-3 students you run your own club (German: AG) once a week between February and July 2016. Our course offers substantial help in the preparatory phase.
- Do your school practice abroad (possibly in combination with your 3 months stay abroad): In most cases this stay abroad will be in an English speaking country but it could also, for example, be in Amsterdam where we have partner schools (all levels) and cooperating universities. If you choose this option, you will need to look out for your own schools but we might be able to help with contacts and support during the application phase.
- Experience bilingual teaching at primary level: More and more primary schools follow the trend and offer bilingual elements in their curriculum. Grab the opportunity to help an Essen based school in the preparation, the teaching and the assessment of bilingual teaching at primary level.
If you are interested in any of the options/projects above, then please let me know as soon as possible as the number of places for each option are limited.
We will use the book „Teaching English: Task Supported Language Learning“ by Müller-Hartmann & Schocker-von Ditfurth in this course. You should bring a copy of the book to the first session. |
