Pflichtvorlesung: Introduction to Literary Studies - Einzelansicht

This lecture "Introduction to Literary Studies" provides an introduction into some of the most important aspects of literature and its academic study. You will be introduced to and expected to work with key definitions of literature. We will discuss central characteristics of the major epochs of literary history in various regions of the Anglophone world and you will work towards a good command of the key features of the most famous literary genres such as the novel, the drama and the poem. The lecture will also provide a brief introduction to literary theories as well as various approaches to literature that have shaped our field. Central areas covered by the lecture will be discussed in detail in each of the seminars to be attended in the second half of the term, a particular focus forming around the most important literary genres – fiction, drama, and poetry – since participants are expected to have a good command of the basic analytical techniques in the field of Anglophone literary studies at the end of the term. Our textual base is taken from a number of regions across the Anglophone world. Participants need to read the material made available in a reader and the relevant chapters in Michael Meyer's English and American Literatures in preparation to each session of the lecture (and for each session of the seminar, for that matter). There will be a written exam ("Klausur") at the end of the lecture-seminar combination. It is necessary for students to take part in both the lecture and the Introductory Course. A reader with the texts to be read for each session will be available at the copy-shop “Unser Kopierladen” (Reckhammerweg 4) at the start of the semester. In addition to the reader, all students will need to acquire and work through their own copy of Michael Meyer's English and American Literatures (buy the respectively latest/newest edition; it is going be your foundational handbook to literary analysis and interpretation throughout your BA studies). Additional books that you have to purchase for this course will be announced in the first session.

Der literaturwissenschaftliche Teil von Modul II bzw. A gliedert sich in zwei Lernschritte. Von Oktober bis Mitte Dezember ist die Vorlesung “Introduction to Literary Studies” zu besuchen, ab Mitte Dezember wechseln Sie in den Seminarmodus, um das in der Vorlesung behandelte Fachwissen an exemplarischen Beispielen zu veranschaulichen und zu vertiefen. Das Seminar ist also der ergänzende Pflicht-Grundkurs zur Vorlesung "Introduction to Literary Studies". Die Anmeldung für das Seminar ist über das zentrale Anmeldeverfahren erforderlich.
