Course Objectives:

The course aims at equipping non-native speakers of English with the strategies to improve their listening, writing, reading and speaking skills, using materials for the C1 level. Students will develop the capacity to deal with unfamiliar topics, express themselves fluently and spontaneously, use language flexibly in  social, academic and professional contexts, produce clear, well-structured texts on complex subjects including showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices along with drawing meaning from a wide range of demanding, longer texts.

Please pick up the relevant materials (C1 Reader) from the copy shop (Schug & Real GbR, Reckhammerweg 4, 45141 Essen) shortly before the second session.

After passing the final exam of this course you have the possibility to receive the DAAD certificate at the C1 level.

English language skills at the B2 level (approx. 240 class hours).

Obligation to attend all sessions including mandatory attendance for the first session. If students fail to attend the first session and do not have an excused absence, they will automatically lose their place in the language course.

Additionally, students are only allowed to miss 2 complete sessions (4x90 minutes) for the entire course.

Active participation is required for successful completion of the class.

Taking the final exam is mandatory.

Taking the placement test before the course is obligatory.

Acquisition of  ECTS credits:

Meeting the requirements mentioned above.

Active participation.

Preparation and reworking of each session.

Passing the final exam.

Final Grading Scheme:

60% exam

20% Presentation

10% Written Assignment #1

10% Written Assignment #2

This also applies to the acquisition of the certificate for the course. There are no certificates of attendance.
