Course Objectives:

While English is increasingly becoming the lingua franca in many disciplines, forms of instruction enabling students to efficiently improve their academic writing proficiency are as yet few. Consequently, this course aims to introduce a range of useful skills that will help to design and write a dissertation in English. Basically, the aim is to move away from reading and writing intuitively by developing an awareness of linguistic phenomena peculiar to academic texts written in English. This awareness may then be applied to one’s own writing. Corresponding instructions, handouts, and other relevant material will complement the sessions.

The course will focus on the following skills relevant for the improvement of writing skills:

  • an active and language-focused reading practice
  • an awareness of the differences between everyday speech and the requirements of written, technical and academic language
  • background knowledge of the various units and aspects of language (words, sentences, paragraphs, text types)
